Role of the SLCB
The SLCB is a platform to voice on behalf of the blind to the Government, Sri Lankan society, donors, media, other Organizations serving the visually impaired, Schools of the Blind,etc., on issues concerning complexities and challenges of visual impairment, and support to alleviate them.
We aim to ensure the visually impaired are served with equality in society, by assisting their education, rehabilitation, training, employment, social understanding for them to be recognized as equals,and wish to reduce their dependence on families, as far as possible.
The main objectives of the SLCB are:
- Fulfill welfare needs of the visually impaired and blind, irrespective of any differences.
- Collaborate with all other domestic organizations servicing the interests of the visually impaired and blind.
- Obtain membership of any domestic organization to serve the visually impaired and blind.
- Liaise with the Asian Blind Union, International Conference of the Blind, and any other international organization/institution to serve the needs of the visually impaired and blind.
- Represent matters related to the visually impaired and blind to the Government Ministries, Departments, Provincial Councils, and any other organization with information, and obtain any information, advice, and other support from them to formulate welfare measures to the clientele group.
- Within the resource base of the Council, provide educational, cultural, vocational training for self-employment, offer scholarships to students, financial support, etc. as welfare measures.
- Conduct ceremonial events with visually impaired and blind, such as the International White Cane Day, International Day of the Visually Impaired, Louise Braille Day, etc.
- Sports training (in-house and outdoor) for the visually impaired and representing at sports meets.
- Free provision of White Canes as an essential item to the visually impaired.
- Supporting any library or institution that requires Braille support or CDs for reading books.
- Representing members at national and international Conferences, Workshops, Training Programs, etc.
- Conduct Flag Days as appropriate.
- Acceptance of funds as donations, till collections, etc. to serve the above-mentioned ends.
